Breakfast Tacos at the Honor House

Beginning immediately we will be serving breakfast tacos, coffee, orange juice and bloody mary's at the Honor House every Friday and Saturday beginning at 8:00 AM.

Sarah And Becca Wolf, twin sisters, were born and raised in The Good Old Texas Hill Country. They started singing when they were very young but only picked up

an interest in playing music and singing publicly in 2007. Sarah taught herself to play guitar. She is the lead vocalist. Becca sings lead and harmony. They have written 16 songs, and there is a CD in the works, hopefully to be released in the Spring 2011.

The Wolf Sisters perform locally throughout the hill country and surrounding areas. They are available for booking with a full band, trio, or duet. For more information contact their manager Ardell Wolf at 830-257-8528.

Tickets are now on sale for "Almost, Maine" and "Cut," the first shows of the 2011 season. The one-act comedies will be presented Feb. 11-26 in the indoor theatre. Performances are Friday-Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.

"Almost, Maine," by John Cariani, was performed as a full length play last year. This year, it is being reprised as a one-act play due to popular demand. The heartwarming tale deals with life and love in the small, mythical town of Almost, Maine.

Chris Huber returns to direct his original ensemble cast: T.J. Ashabranner, Philip D. Huddleston, Sarah Tacey, Jessica Roberts, Ginny Clendennen, and Tim Clendennen with the addition of Summer White.

Patrons will also be able to enjoy "Cut," by Ed Monk, a one-act performed by the Ingram Tom Moore High School theatre department. Directed by Holly Riedel and Marie Cearley, "Cut" is about the confusion that develops when actors rehearse a play within a play and begin to forget who is playing whom.

Last Weekend to See Homecoming

Don't miss out! "Smoke on the Mountain Homecoming" closes this weekend so you have three more chances to see this heartwarming musical comedy. Directed by Ann Galland, the show has been playing to sold-out crowds. The final three performances are Friday-Saturday, Dec. 10-11 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 12 at 2 p.m.

It's 1945 and The Sanders family once again visits Rev. Oglethorpe's small Baptist church in North Carolina. The reverend is preaching his last sermon as he and his pregnant wife, June, prepare to take over a congregation in Texas. Young Dennis Sanders will become the new pastor. As in the earlier plays, family members share their hilarious stories between bluegrass and gospel songs.

Guests are invited to bring non-perishable foods and toiletries to be donated to the Christian Assistance Ministry to help those in need. Collection bins are located in the theatre lobby.

The Gallery exhibit, "Destinations," featuring the work of Texas college students, will be open for viewing one hour prior to every show.

Destinations Winners Announced

Currently on display in the gallery at The Point is Destinations, a juried exhibit for college students. This year's exhibition was juried by Jerry Seagle of Austin. Seagle graduated with honors from the University of Texas at Austin with a BFA in Painting. He received a graduate fellowship to further his studies at the University of the Americas in Mexico City. Seagle relies on the strength of design and rich color to create his bold compositions.

Seagle said that this exhibition is "a strong and positive body of work that appears to speak about current issues. There is a definite edge to these pieces and also a quality of rawness. Selecting the ones for awards was difficult as all contained those elements that 'make work work.' Art should encourage the viewer to explore. This exhibit does that."

The first place Lucille Hollecher Scholarship award went to Isaiah Chavez of Texas State University for his charcoal and graphite drawing entitled Transformation. Second place was awarded to Seth Miller of Houston Baptist University for his mixed media collage entitled Anonymous Pity. Boost in Productivity / Lack of Individuality by Chris Long of Austin Community College merited third place. Recognitions selected as juror's choice were awarded to Stephen Bolin of Texas State University, Kristy Scales of Texas Tech and Lauren Miggins of Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Other exhibition artists include Andrea Novoa of the University of Houston, Avery Zieben of the University of Texas at Austin, Jenny DeLaughter of Texas Woman's University, Lauren Miller of Schreiner University and Jessica Battes of the University of Texas at San Antonio.

GreyStar Team

Tammi Newman and Greystar held a morning meeting at our new sister property, Gruene Cottages.

They needed a conference style meeting set up for 18 people, as well as audio visual equipment. All of our audio visual equipment and wifi is free if you book the meeting space. Greystar wanted a casual meeting and opted to bring in their own breakfast tacos and Starbucks coffee. The group from Austin spent the morning meeting at the Cottages, and then headed to the Gristmill for lunch.

This is a great example of how you can treat your team to a morning out of the office, but still get the needed work done.

McAfee Team
Amy Woods, Ken McCray and the McAfee crew held a two-day team-building retreat at the Gruene Mansion Inn.

Their group arrived on a Monday afternoon and leisurely settled into their rooms. Some even had time to do some shopping. Just prior to dinner, they enjoyed a relaxed Q&A session with Cecil Eager, the proprietor of Gruene Mansion Inn. He went over the history of Gruene Mansion Inn, Gruene Hall and the Historic District of Gruene. After catching up on the history, they headed to the Gristmill and Gruene Hall to take in some of the local flair.

Their Tuesday agenda started off with the delicious Gruene Mansion Inn breakfast at 7:30 a.m.. They worked in the Gruene Mansion Inn meeting space, set up for 15 people in U shape with audio visual equipment and wifi. A light lunch of salads and sandwiches was served from the top- rated, nationally recognized River House Tea Room. Snacks and drinks were provided throughout the day to help the group maintain the necessary focus on work. By the sounds of the laughter, the McAfee group sure knew how to incorporate fun into their agenda.

After a night of delicious, caliente Tex-Mex from Adobe Verde, they headed "out on the town" for some true honky-tonk fun! With Gruene Mansion Inn's prime location in the center of Gruene, there are several antique stores, unique shops, and 5 famous restaurants within walking distance. And with the Guadalupe River in our backyard, there is always something fun to do.

On the final day of their retreat,
after enjoying their Gruene Mansion Inn breakfast, the McAfee group was able to cover the last few points on their meeting agenda....just in time for lunch. After enjoying some Rudy's BBQ, we said our goodbyes and wished them safe travels.
This is a great example of how you can get away from the grind of the office and have a relaxing, enjoyable time, while still being productive and building stronger relationships within your team, for your business.

Smoke on the Mountain Homecoming Opens Friday

The wacky Sanders Family is back in "Smoke on the Mountain Homecoming" opening Friday at 7:30 p.m. on the indoor stage. "Homecoming," directed by Ann Galland, is Part III of the popular Sanders Family Trilogy. The musical comedy will be performed Friday-Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. through Dec. 12.

Opening night guests are invited to attend a pre-show reception in the gallery at 6 p.m. in honor of the new exhibit "Destinations." The works of Texas college students will be on display.

Galland directed the first two plays in the series, "Smoke on the Mountain" in 2007 and "Sanders Family Christmas" in 2007 and 2008. The first play introduces the singing Sanders family as they visit Rev. Oglethorpe's small Baptist church. "Sanders Family Christmas" takes place during World War II as the family again travels to the church before young Dennis is shipped overseas.

"Smoke on the Mountain Homecoming" is set after World War II. The family is reunited briefly, but Rev. Oglethorpe and his wife June are moving to Texas, and Dennis is preparing to take over as pastor of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. "Homecoming" features bluegrass and gospel tunes mixed with the humorous "testimonies" of the Sanders family.

Guests are asked to bring non-perishable foods and toiletries to be donated to the Christian Assistance Ministry to help those in need. Collection bins will be located in the theatre lobby.

The lights at night will be bigger and brighter during this holiday season as the famous Hill Country Christmas Lighting Trail lights the skies. Eleven communities are part of the Texas Hill Country Christmas Lighting Trail - the area's most celebrated family holiday tradition - between Thanksgiving and New Year's. The official start date of the trail is November 26, 2010.

Participating communities include: Boerne, Burnet, Dripping Springs, Fredericksburg, Goldthwaite, Johnson City, Kerrville, Llano, Marble Falls, New Braunfels, and Wimberley. All are within easy driving distance of central Texas and promise holiday excitement for every member of the family.

The Gillespie County Historical Society has unveiled seven properties that will be featured on the 2010 Holiday Home Tour on Saturday, December 11, 2010, from noon until 6 p.m. These select homes will be open to the public for the first time on the Home Tour, according to Jennifer Schandua, Home Committee Chair. Highlights range from historic properties that have been restored, to modern structures designed to capture Fredericksburg’s architectural heritage.

Tickets for the Home Tour are $25 per person and include tour booklet and access to all properties. Tickets may be purchased online at www.pioneermuseum.net, or by calling 830-997-2835.

The homes are:

Larry and Deanna Corn, 209 E. Centre Street

The Corn home that was built in 1995 and enlarged in 2009 is a fine example of Fredericksburg “built new to look old” architecture. Long leaf pine floors and trim compliment the limestone walls and create a cozy feeling that wraps itself around you as you enter the front door. After purchasing the home, the Corns initiated an addition to its footprint, creating a new large living and dining area with vaulted ceiling. The entire home looks into a courtyard area surrounded by a rock fence with grass and native plants.

Marsha and Jerry Bane, 305 S. Milam Street

This beautiful home is filled with antiques, accent pieces, and - during Christmas - will include antique glass Christmas ball ornaments that have been collected over the years. A hobby /laundry room right off the kitchen holds a gorgeous display of plates and accessories in bookcases all along the far wall. A huge limestone fireplace stands freely in the area between the front entry and living room. Marsha has loads of silver accent pieces on her vanity and around the soaking tub in the master bathroom, with unusual shadow boxes scattered on every free space of wall in the master bath! A friend of hers makes cute and kind of wacky characters out of random scraps of paper, fabric, objects-just whatever and attaches them to the outside of her gifts. Marsha has kept all of these, framed them and put them on display!

Cydney Donnell and Robert Lotito, 309 W. Schubert

Purchased and restored by well-known local architect Albert Keidel in 1939, this home stands the test of time. The current owners have kept the footprint true to the original. It has small rooms, especially the kitchen, but makes good use of the space. It features tile and hardwood floors, fireplaces, and a bay window overlooking a fountain running through the garden. In the master bedroom there is an armoire facade built up to the wall to cover a standard size closet-very clever and attractive. The homeowners remodeled the master bathroom, featuring a skylight with a huge chandelier, a beautiful corner tub, exposed limestone walls, and an adorable vanity. The home is nicely decorated with eye-catching upholstery and a grand piano.

David and Ruth Lusk, 768 Pecan Creek Rd

Out of town, the newly built Lusk home and guesthouse provide stunning Hill Country views from hilltop settings. The guesthouse was built first for the owners to enjoy while construction on the main home was underway. Vibrant wall color as you enter the home helps to showcase the owners’ collection of Blue Ridge Pottery. A small screened in porch is sited to catch summer breezes, and a beautiful in-ground pool and surrounding landscaped patio beacons you to relax and enjoy the view. All areas of the property are pet friendly to accommodate the owners’ lover for rescue animals. After retiring from busy careers out of state, the owners have happily settled in to the Fredericksburg community and lifestyle.

Jim and Carol McCrae, 623 Walking Plow Rd

The McCrae’s out-of-town home is one they built themselves in 1995. This original home was small and efficient, and built of reclaimed materials by the couple on weekend visits from their busy lives in San Antonio. After completing the house, they had a new barn built, and converted the old barn on the property into their guest quarters. An addition to their main house was completed in 2009. The home is filled with great antiques collected throughout their lives, and the views are spectacular. It is truly a property where their skills and their love of history are on display.

Walter and Judith Skinner, 419 W. San Antonio Street

This old Fredericksburg Sunday house was in the Weidenfeller family. In its later years it was a B&B, and is now the second home of this retired couple from Dallas. Judith has filled the home with treasured collections. The old rock home has clearly been well preserved. The living room features a fireplace, wood floors, baby grand piano, and antique furniture. The sitting area appears as though it may have been the back porch to the original house because the floor is rock. There is an old tub in the bathroom with a wood surround and a collection of samplers on the wall. An addition now houses the dining area and country kitchen, where Judith displays her collection of chickens from Schwettmann’s Taxidermy. Around the back corner of the kitchen is a staircase leading down to the wine cellar, probably the original home’s root cellar. Upstairs is a guest room that displays many children’s antiques. This small house packs a punch!

Pete and Alice Jensen, 406 N. Washington Street

This newer rock home has a cheery feeling as soon as you walk in, thanks to the lively yellow painted walls. Alice’s hobby is sewing and she has dressed the windows in her home, patio cushions, and much more. Her husband Pete’s hobby is woodworking. He has made many of the furniture pieces, including the nifty sewing table that folds out of the standard closet in the spare bedroom. The master bedroom showcases some more furniture built by Pete. Their living room has two sleighs on the wall that Pete made and a coffee table. There is a grape press behind one of the couches in the living room that came from Alice’s family. The roomy kitchen leads to a beautiful yard and porch where they have their morning coffee. The Jensens built a two-story building immediately behind the main house. The downstairs serves as a workshop for Pete and the upstairs is a B&B.

Albert Ice House & Dance Hall Celebrates First Anniversary

~ Easley family commemorates with live music from Two Tons of Steel ~

AUSTIN – November 3, 2010 – This weekend, the Texas-born Easley family, owners of the 13-acre historical town Albert, Texas, will commemorate the one-year anniversary of the Albert Ice House and Dance Hall with a two-day celebration full of live music. The weekend will kick off with local talent Lisa and Greg, of Trace of Gold along with Riley’s BBQ specials on Friday, November 5 starting at 5:30p in the Ice House Beer Garden. On Saturday, November 6 at 7p, people are invited to dance the night away with music from well-known rockabilly group, Two Tons of Steel and enjoy Riley’s BBQ and ice-cold refreshments in Dance Hall and Beer Garden patio.

Erected in 1922, the Albert Dance Hall originally began as the Ice House, supplying the town’s music entertainment and beer garden. In the fall of 2009, the Easley family made major renovations to preserve both the interior and exterior, even inviting locals to mark the bars with their unique branding irons. Since then, the Albert Dance Hall has been named a member of The Texas Dance Hall Preservation, Inc. and has turned into a Hill Country music destination featuring regular Texas talent including Gary Burg, Lisa and Greg of Trace of Gold, Dean Strickland, Dos Amigos, Dale Watson, Cory Morrow, Aaron Watson, Gary P. Nunn in both the Dance Hall and Ice House venues.

“My family and I are thrilled to be celebrating our first year at Albert. This past year has been a very busy one and a ton of work has been put into reviving this piece of Texas history,” said Brandon Easley on behalf of the Easley family. “We continue to meet new and very special folks every week and that's what makes this venture exciting. As we roll into fall, New Braunfels stands tall as a great place to be in both the fall and winter.

Wurstfest is an annual 10 day festival that pays homage to the German culture, with a highlight on sausage, beer, fun and games. This year Wurstfest will be held starting Friday, October 29 and ending Sunday, November 7. If you have not yet made plans to come to New Braunfels for this great event, we still have plenty of cottages and RV sites available. For a small fee there is a service called Wurstwagen that will take you to and from Wurstfest.

In addition to Wurstfest, Gruene Market Days will continue to be held throughout the fall and winter on the third weekend of the month, starting October 15, November 19 and December 17. Nearby Gruene Hall continues to provide great music to our town.

The rivers are still open for business as well. The weather is great, the rivers are full and open for tubing. Please visit our website for links to local river outfitters.

The fall and winter provides a great time for our northern guests, a.k.a. Winter Texans, to descend on our city to escape the much colder temperatures up north. Here at Hill Country, we welcome hundreds of visitors from Canada, as well as many northern states. Fishing on the dock at Hi-Line Lake Resort is a popular place in the Fall season. You can fish inside or outside of the dock, whether it is sunny or raining, cold or hot. We bait the dock for crappie, but catfish and some bass are also caught. The picture shows a catfish that was caught off the dock and was 39 lbs and 39 inches.

Linda & Rick, of Spicewood, have been represented by Artisans at Rocky Hill since the spring of 2009. The work of both artists has been popular with gallery guests & their work is favored throughout the Texas Hill Country, New Mexico and beyond.

Linda’s art is a combination of fantasy and representational realism. Most of her brightly colored acrylic paintings evolve from her imagination. Linda’s flower paintings are impressionistic in nature while her “hard edge fantasy” pieces combine the surrealistic world of dreams with her own mind’s eye. This intriguing style created by Linda is reminiscent of Gustaf Klimpt pattern wise, and poster like in its rendering. Linda’s work is always from the heart and will produce a mood when it is viewed.

The art of Rick Hewitt combines copper with fire and chemical treatment to create interesting and colorful adornments for the outdoors. Texture is hammered into the copper by hand and colors are the result of a special chemical burn. Rick’s Copper Wind Dancers along with hand-created feather clusters have been very popular with gallery visitors. The beautiful Hill Country where Rick lives has influenced his nature oriented colors and designs. New sculptural designs in copper will be presented during the “Fall Fantasies” show.

Lotte fires Lettice and later the two become fast friends as they enact famous historical trials and executions.

A Tuna Christmas Opens Friday

It's Christmas in August at The Point Theatre as the hilarious comedy "A Tuna Christmas" opens Friday, Aug. 6 at 8:30 p.m. on the outdoor stage. The eccentric characters from last summer's "Greater Tuna" return to the stage in the yuletide sequel directed by David Cockerell. Written by Ed Howard, Joe Sears, and Jaston Williams, the play runs through August 21 and is The Point's last outdoor show of the season.

Guests attending opening night can get into the holiday spirit with the pre-show reception honoring "A Tuna Christmas" and the exhibition, "Visions of Santa," at 7:00 p.m. in the Gallery at The Point. The exhibit, by Billy Keen, features Santa portraits dating from 1974 and will be on display through Sept. 3.

Four actors, Ryan Bailey, Dennie Pierce, Justin Shotts, and Bob Straus portray all 24 citizens of Tuna, the fictional third-smallest town in Texas where "the Lion's club is too liberal and Patsy Cline never dies."

The play is a satirical look at small town Texas and contains exaggerated characterizations and situations appropriate for mature audiences.

"A Tuna Christmas" will be performed Friday-Sunday, Aug. 6-8; and Thursday-Saturday, Aug. 12-14 and Aug. 19-21 at 8:30 p.m. CART Services for the hearing impaired are available Saturday, Aug. 7. On Sunday, Aug. 8, all tickets are $8. For Point Season Pass holders, this is the last opportunity to use the passes this year.

As July winds down, it's not too late to plan a summer vacation to New Braunfels before Schlitterbahn closes.

With all the recent rains we have had, the Guadalupe and Comal Rivers are having a stellar summer, with near perfect conditions for tubing. CATS Pounces On Stage Friday

Andrew Lloyd Weber's whimsical musical "Cats" pounces onto The Point Theatre outdoor stage Friday, July 9 at 8:30 p.m. The play, which will be produced for the first time in the Hill Country, is directed by Jim Weisman, who brought to the stage last summer's hits, "Treasure Island", Disney's "Beauty and the Beast," and 2008's "Robin Hood."

Opening night festivities include a pre-show reception at 7 p.m. in the gallery in honor of the current exhibit Hill Country Chronicles.

The Tony Award winning musical is the second longest running show on Broadway and is based on T.S. Eliot's "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats." The show is appropriate for all ages.

"Cats" follows seven generations of cats that have gathered for a family reunion and celebration called the Jellicle Cats Ball. The Point cast includes 18 adult cats and 9 kittens.

CART Services for the hearing impaired will be offered at the Saturday, July 10 performance. Family Night is Sunday, July 11 when all tickets are priced at only $8. For more information, call the box office at 830-367-5121 or visit www.hcaf.com.
